Our Editorial Services

The editing process strives to be consistent, error-free, and complete as possible. As such, editors invest time in tracking details to complete those responsibilities. Those details are tracked according to requested editing levels, which may be confusing for authors, especially new authors.

The following information serves to help eliminate confusion about the editing levels.

- Book Coaching -

This level can be viewed as the first step in the editing process; however, it is not editing, nor is it developmental editing. At this level, the manuscript is in progress.

At this stage of the writing process, the manuscript is incomplete. Coaches collaborate with authors to kick off the process, get it off the ground, or to help in sticky situations. Book coaching also works to pinpoint and tailor to your audience.

Although there are similarities in coaching through fiction and nonfiction works, there are differences. The book coaching process varies from project to project.

Acceptance for proofreading is assessed individually. If you are stalled in this area, we invite you to schedule a consultation with us.

- Developmental Editing -

Developmental editing is also referred to as structural or content editing. The second step in the editing process, or the first in the absence of book coaching.

It offers a comprehensive content edit that concentrates on a story's pacing (speed and rhythm), cohesive structure (the connection that holds story elements together), and setting (time, place, and circumstances where events take place). Developing consistent characters is equally important at this editing level.

Also, at this stage, the manuscript is complete. Editors' suggestions may include omitting, repositioning, and enhancing content to ensure your story is effective and compelling. Price 2.5 cents per word.

- Line Editing -

The third step in the editing process, it requires multiple read-throughs. Line editing is meticulous in identifying repetitive words, inconsistent verb tenses, unclear logic in narration, problematic sentences, and point-of-view errors. Editors strive to maintain the author's voice, as well as the story's mood and tone. Price: 2.5 cents per word.

We provide a tailored, comprehensive summary letter detailing feedback and offer suggestions for improvement. A customized style sheet is included; it's used to maintain consistency throughout the written work, keeps your reading audience interested, and streamlines the editing process. Price: 2.5 cents per word.

- Copyediting -

Copyediting focuses on grammar, spelling, and punctuation. When warranted, we fact-check to assure content is correct and consistent. Based on which literary genre being edited, we use the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) as our primary style guide.

We strive for quality-control in checking for inconsistencies and to help authors with a polished final draft of their manuscript.

Although there are similarities in proofreading and copyediting, the two are not the same; there are differences. Copyediting focuses on language-based editing, whereas proofreading concentrates on surface-level inaccuracies. The proofreading process varies from project to project.
